Highway 1

Big sky, old towns and the road everyone thinks they already know.

Highway 1 — The Trans-Canada
Southern Saskatchewan, stitched together by one long ribbon of pavement.

Highway 1 is easy to treat as a get-there road. That is exactly why it is fun to do the opposite. From the Manitoba side through Regina and Moose Jaw to Swift Current and the Alberta line, there are old main streets, prairie landmarks and side trips hiding just beyond the exits.

Think of this page as permission to stop. You do not need to see everything; you just need one or two reasons to turn a familiar highway into a road trip.

Route at a Glance

Moosomin → Wolseley & Indian Head → Regina → Moose Jaw → Swift Current → Maple Creek.
Enough detail to sketch a drive — enough blank space to make it yours.

01

Moosomin

An eastern gateway stop with the services you need and a good place to reset before the long southern prairie run.

02

Wolseley & Indian Head

Two easy reasons to slow down: historic streets, prairie architecture and small-town stops that make the Trans-Canada feel less anonymous.

03

Regina

The Queen City is the big central reset — museums, parks, food, fuel and plenty of options before you continue west.

04

Moose Jaw

A natural road-trip favourite with historic downtown character and enough attractions to turn a fuel stop into half a day.

05

Swift Current

Southwest Saskatchewan starts to feel different here. Use the city as a base for prairie drives, museums, food and bigger detours.

06

Maple Creek

A western anchor with a strong old-main-street feel and one of the best jumping-off points for Cypress Hills country.

Make a Little Time

The best road trips usually involve at least one unscheduled turn.

Worth the Detour

East of Regina, the Qu’Appelle Valley is worth the turn. West of Moose Jaw, Chaplin adds salt-lake and birding country. Farther west, the Great Sand Hills and Cypress Hills can turn Highway 1 into an entirely different Saskatchewan trip.

RTL rule: the sign that makes you say “what's down there?” is usually worth a look.

Road Notes

  • The Trans-Canada crosses Saskatchewan from Manitoba to Alberta through the southern part of the province.
  • Wolseley, Indian Head and other towns are ideal for short heritage and photo stops.
  • Major detours are part of the fun — the best scenery is not always visible from the four-lane.
  • This route can easily be split into east and west day trips if a full crossing feels too ambitious.
Main Street Meets the Highway
The road pages and the books can feed each other — quietly.

Highway 1 has the right mix of larger centres and old prairie towns to support plenty of Main Street side stories. When a Highway 1 community appears in Main Street Then & Now, we can add a small “Read the Then & Now story” link without interrupting the drive.
